YouTube..better you than me

I had preconceived notions about YouTube before I starting exploring the site. Guess what? All of those perception were proved. Call it self full filling prophecy if you want, but its content is mostly junk and its a waste of time. Violence, sex, people trying to be funny and failing miserably. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdCd4abfW1M

I can get the content I really want (news, sports) elsewhere without having to deal with the bs.

YouTube: further proof of the dumbing down of our culture and society.

I don't agree. I use YouTube every week - almost daily - for various reasons. There is so much there that I haven't been able to find other places. I found musical clips for my daughter to get an idea for auditions, those commercials that everyone is talking about around the water cooler that you haven't seen, old SNL skits, I've shown my daughters all of the schoolhouse rock videos that we used to watch on Saturday morning cartoons, even the recent 80's party we went to - I found most of my "costume" help on YouTube. I agree that I don't think I'd just wander around the site, but if you have a need for a video I would encourage you to give it another try. You might be surprised what you would find.
There are even quite a few CML clips - from news broadcasts, storytimes, etc.

I forgot one of the most valuable ways we used YouTube recently: our daughter has started playing the trumpet, and we found a demonstration of how to clean it (which parts get immersed in the tub, which just get oiled, etc.). I had found websites that told how to do it, but a written description would not have provided the same information of how to take it apart and show the parts and demonstrate the different steps. Sometimes watching someone do something is much more helpful. Just one example of the "how-to" videos that are available there.

Good points Netter. I should have said that "in my random searches", I found things that I considerd to be "junk".

One thing I did notice YouTube does is put the hits from your searches at the top. I suppose once you start doing specific searches and getting specific results, some of the junk goes away. I'll give it a try and report back.
